# Item Discounts Item Discounts takes a fixed amount or a percentage off chosen items or whole categories, on the days and hours you set. The Register applies it on its own, or the cashier applies it with a button. The rules are kept in your PayPlaxe account, so every Clover device of the store shows the same list. - Price: $0.99 / month - Platform: Clover POS (United States and Canada) - Install: https://www.clover.com/appmarket/apps/NY2C9TQWJ05AC - Manual: https://howto.payplaxe.com/en/item-discounts.html ## How it works 1. **A discount is a rule** — You set what comes off, which items it applies to, and when it is allowed to run. 2. **The rules live in your account** — Discounts are stored in your PayPlaxe account under your Clover merchant, not on one device. The Clover app applies them to orders; the same list opens on every Clover device of the store and in a browser, so an edit made in one place shows up in the others. 3. **The card tells you the state** — Each discount shows **Active now**, **Ended**, **No days selected**, or a countdown such as **Starts in 2d 4h**. 4. **Automatic or on request** — An automatic discount is attached by the Register the moment the item is added to the order. An item rung up before the window opened keeps its full price — remove it and add it again. A manual one waits behind the tender button. 5. **Weight is taken into account** — With `Weight discounts` on, an automatic **AMOUNT** discount is multiplied by the item's weight. A **PERCENTAGE** discount already follows the price, and a discount given at the tender is applied as entered. 6. **Archive instead of delete** — A finished promotion keeps its settings and can be restored next season. **Delete** removes it for good. ## What it does - **Items or categories** — `Apply on ...` targets individual items or every item in a category. - **Amount or percentage** — A dollar off each unit, or a percentage off the price. - **Day and time schedule** — Start and end dates, a daily time window, and the weekdays it runs on. - **Automatic or manual** — Attached to a matching item as it is rung up, or left behind the tender button for the cashier. - **Live status** — **Active now**, **Ended**, **No days selected** or a countdown such as **Starts in 2d 4h**. - **Weight discounts** — An automatic **AMOUNT** discount is multiplied by the item weight for goods sold by weight. A percentage discount and a discount given at the tender are not. - **Archive and restore** — Archive a seasonal promotion and bring it back next year instead of building it again. - **Employee restrictions** — Decide which employees may add or edit discounts and change the tender button. Admins cannot be restricted. - **Web version** — [itemdiscounts.payplaxe.com](https://itemdiscounts.payplaxe.com) opens the same Discounts, Archives and Settings in a browser. It is not a separate product: this is the setup side of the app you already have, with nothing extra to buy. Sign in with `Login via Clover`. Discounts are applied to orders by the Clover device, not by the browser. ## First setup 1. Open **Item Discounts**.The bottom tabs are `Discounts` and `Settings`. 2. Open `Settings` — it opens only for a Manager or Admin login — and check `Tender Button Name (In Clover Register)`. The button is created automatically and is called **Item Discounts** until you rename it here. 3. Go back to `Discounts` and tap `+`. 4. Enter a name, pick a colour, then choose `Apply on ...` — **Item** or **Categories** — and select the products. 5. Choose **AMOUNT** or **PERCENTAGE** and type the value. 6. Choose **AUTOMATICALLY** or **MANUALLY (VIA TENDER)**. For an automatic discount, set the From/To dates and times and tick the weekdays; the daily window must start and end on the same day. A manual discount has no schedule — it is always available behind the tender button. 7. Save and check the card: it should read `Active now` or show a countdown. 8. In `Settings` → `Restrictions` — the screen opens titled **Permissions** on the Clover device — tap an employee who should not change the rules and tick `Add/edit discounts` in the **'name' can't:** list. A ticked box takes the ability away; unticking it gives the ability back. An Admin cannot be restricted, and a Manager cannot restrict another Manager. > If the card says `No days selected`, the discount can never run — open it and tick the weekdays. ## Setup scenarios ### End-of-day bakery markdown Fresh goods should drop in price after a certain hour, every day, without staff action. 1. Open **Item Discounts** → `Discounts` and tap `+`. 2. Name it `Evening bakery` and pick a colour. 3. `Apply on ...` = **Categories**, then select the bakery category. 4. `Discount type` = **Percentage**, value 30. 5. `Add to order ...` = **Automatically**. 6. Set the time window from 19:00 to 21:00 and tick every weekday, then save. 7. The list now shows the discount with a countdown until it becomes **Active now**. ### A weekday promotion on selected items A supplier deal on a handful of products, Monday to Thursday only. 1. Create a discount and choose `Apply on ...` = **Item**. 2. Tap `Select items` and tick the products in the deal. 3. Choose **Amount** and enter the discount per unit. 4. Set the date range to the length of the supplier deal. 5. Tick MO, TU, WE, TH and save. 6. When the promotion ends, archive it instead of deleting — it is ready for next time. ### A manual discount for damaged goods Should be given by decision, not automatically to everyone. 1. Create a discount, set `Add to order ...` = **Manually (via tender)**. 2. Select the items or categories it may be applied to. 3. Open `Settings` and check the `Tender Button Name` — it reads **Item Discounts** until you rename it. Tell the cashier the name it has. 4. In `Restrictions`, tap each employee who should not change the rules and tick `Add/edit discounts` — a ticked box forbids the action. Admins cannot be restricted. 5. At the register the cashier opens the tender button and picks the discount in `Select manual discount`. ## Discounts list | Control | What it does | |---|---| | Name | Your label for the promotion. | | Discount | The value: an amount or a percentage. | | When | The date range and the daily time window. | | Weekday chips | Green means the discount runs that day. | | Status line | Active now · Ended · No days selected · Starts in … | | Pencil icon on a card | Edit, Archive or Delete that discount. Both Archive and Delete ask to confirm. Archive keeps the discount in Archives; Delete removes it for good. | | Archive icon (top right) | Opens the Archives screen. | | + button | Creates a new discount. | ## Discount editor | Control | What it does | |---|---| | Name | Required. Shown on the order and in reports. | | Colour square | The colour stripe on the discount card — in the list, in Archives and in the cashier's discount picker. | | Apply on ... | **Item** — hand-picked products. **Categories** — everything in the chosen categories. | | 0 items selected | Opens the picker; the count updates as you tick products. | | Discount type | **AMOUNT** takes a fixed sum off each item; **PERCENTAGE** takes a share off. | | Add to order ... | **AUTOMATICALLY** or **MANUALLY (VIA TENDER)**. | | From / To | Start and end of the promotion, plus the daily time window. Shown only for automatic discounts. The window must start and end on the same day; an end time before the start time is refused with `The end time should be less than the start time`. | | Apply to all custom items | A custom item typed in at the register is matched by this switch alone — not by the Item or Categories selection, and not by the order type. | | Apply to the following orders | **ANY ORDER** by default. Pick one Clover order type and the discount is added only on orders of that type. | ## Settings Settings opens only for a Manager or Admin login; an employee sees `Please login as Manager or Admin`. | Control | What it does | |---|---| | Tender Button Name | The button cashiers press for manual discounts. It is created automatically and is called **Item Discounts** until you rename it here. | | Weight discounts | Multiplies an automatic **AMOUNT** discount by the item weight — for goods sold by weight. **PERCENTAGE** discounts and discounts given at the tender ignore it. | | Restrictions | Per employee: tick what they can't do — add/edit discounts, change the tender button. On the Clover device the screen opens titled **Permissions**. An Admin cannot be restricted, and a Manager cannot restrict another Manager. | | Contact us | Support request from inside the app. | | Debug info | Internal log; for support only. Only a Manager or Admin can change it. | | App version | The build number to quote when you contact support. | ## Archives Archived promotions keep their settings and can be brought back. | Control | What it does | |---|---| | Card | Shows the discount as it was archived, including how it applied. | | Restore icon | Puts the discount back into the active list. | | Empty state | `You have no archived discounts` — nothing has been archived yet. | ## Everyday use - An automatic discount is attached when the item is rung up. An item that was already in the order before the window opened keeps its full price — remove it and add it again. - For a manual discount, open the payment screen, tap your tender button and pick the discount in `Select manual discount`. Each line says in green how many items in this order it matches, or `No matched items in the cart` in red; a discount that matches nothing is refused with `No matching items/categories in the order`. - If a discount should not run today, archive it rather than deleting it — the app has no on/off switch, and an archived discount stops applying at once and keeps its settings. **Delete** removes the discount for good; it cannot be restored. - When a promotion is over, archive it so it can be restored next time. ## Troubleshooting | Symptom | What to do | |---|---| | The card says `No days selected`. | No weekday is ticked. Open the discount and select the days it should run on. | | The discount is `Active now` but nothing happens at the register. | Three things to check. The order may hold no item from the selected list or category (`Apply on ...`). `Apply to the following orders` may name one order type while this order is another type. Or the items were rung up before the window opened — the discount is only attached at that moment, so remove them and add them again. | | The cashier cannot find the manual discount. | The tender button always exists: it is created automatically and is called **Item Discounts** until you rename it in `Settings`, so tell the cashier the name it has. If the button opens but the discount is missing, no discount is set to **Manually (via tender)**, or the order holds no item the discount covers — the picker then shows `No matched items in the cart`. | | Weight-based goods get the wrong discount. | Weight is only applied to an automatic **AMOUNT** discount, and only with `Weight discounts` on. A **PERCENTAGE** discount already follows the price, and a discount given at the tender is applied as entered. | | The promotion should run from 22:00 to 02:00. | A daily window cannot cross midnight; saving is refused with `The end time should be less than the start time`. Make two discounts: one from 22:00 to 23:59 and one from 00:00 to 02:00. | | An employee changed a promotion. | In `Restrictions`, tap that employee and tick `Add/edit discounts` in the **'name' can't:** list. A ticked box blocks the action; an unticked box allows it. An Admin cannot be restricted, and a Manager cannot restrict another Manager — sign in as Admin to restrict a Manager. | | `Restrictions` answers `Reinstall the app to enable this feature`. | The app has no permission to read the employee list. Reinstall Item Discounts from the Clover App Market, accept the permissions, then open `Restrictions` again. | | The app's dialog never appears on the payment screen; Clover shows "Customer is choosing payment method". | Open the Clover **Setup** app → `Payments` and uncheck `Automatically take payment on Connected Device`, so payment is taken on the primary device. | | Settings cannot be opened or changed. | Sign in with an employee whose Clover role is **Manager** or **Admin**. Some apps also have their own `Restrict access` switch that locks the configuration. | | The app works erratically, or stops reacting after the device has been idle. | Turn off Battery Saver in the device's Android settings and keep the device online. | | A change made on one device is not visible on another. | Settings sync through the cloud; give it a minute and make sure both devices have a network connection. | ## FAQ **Can one discount cover several categories?** Yes — select as many categories as you need in the discount editor. **What does 'weight discounts' do?** It multiplies an automatic **AMOUNT** discount by the item's weight, so goods sold by weight get a proportional discount. A **PERCENTAGE** discount and a discount given at the tender are applied as entered. **Why does my discount say 'No days selected'?** No weekday is ticked, so it can never run. Open it and select the days. **What is the difference from Order Discounts?** [Order Discounts](order-discounts.html) works on the whole order and runs cash discount programs; Item Discounts targets items and categories. **Do archived discounts still apply?** No. Archiving stops the discount; restoring it makes it live again. **Can I set the discounts up from a computer?** Yes. [itemdiscounts.payplaxe.com](https://itemdiscounts.payplaxe.com) opens the same app in a browser: `Discounts` with the full editor, `Archives`, and `Settings` with weight discounts and restrictions. Sign in with `Login via Clover`; there is no separate password. Everything that happens at the register stays on the Clover device: the browser never applies a discount to an order, and `Tender Button Name (In Clover Register)` is set in the Clover app. **How much does it cost?** $0.99 per month, with a 30-day free trial. --- Support: contact@payplaxe.com · answers in 5-15 minutes.
