Age Verify

Age Verify puts a mandatory age check in front of restricted items. Group your products, set the minimum age per group, and the Register asks for the customer's date of birth — or reads it from a scanned driver's licence — before the sale can continue. Every check is logged.

Overview

How it works

1

Products are grouped by age

A group holds the items or categories that need a check, plus the minimum age for them.

2

The check happens in the Register

Adding a restricted item stops the sale until a date of birth is provided.

3

Two ways to answer

Scan a driver's licence barcode, or type the birthday as mm/dd/yy.

4

Proof is optional but useful

Verified orders can carry your own line on the receipt, and every check is written to the report.

The app never replaces the Clover Register — it adds to it. Payments, taxes and reporting stay in Clover.
Features

What it does

01

Groups with their own age

One group for 18+, another for 21+ — each with its own list of items or categories.

02

Items or categories

Cover a whole category at once, or hand-pick individual items.

03

Driver's licence scanning

Scan the licence barcode with your Clover scanner instead of typing the birthday — the app reads the date of birth from it.

04

Manual entry

Type the date of birth as mm/dd/yy when there is no scannable ID.

05

Autocomplete

Once a birthday is entered, the app can verify the remaining checks in the order automatically.

06

Skip control

Decide whether employees are allowed to skip a verification at all.

07

Receipt line

Print your own text — for example Age Verified — on receipts where a check passed.

08

Reports

Date and time, the age recorded, the employee and the order for every verification.

Every app has a 30-day free trial. Clover bills the subscription with your monthly Clover invoice; one subscription covers the whole store unless the price row says otherwise.

How to install

  1. Open the Clover App Market — on the device, or at clover.com/appmarket in your web dashboard.
  2. Find the app by name, or open its direct link from the button above.
  3. Tap Connect / Install and accept the permissions the app requests.
  4. The 30-day free trial starts automatically. The subscription then appears on your monthly Clover invoice.
  5. Open the app on the Clover device and sign in with a Manager or Admin employee account to configure it.
  6. To cancel, open the app in the App Market and tap Uninstall.

Install and cancel any time from the Clover App Market.

First setup

Do this once, in this order. It takes a few minutes and the app is then ready for the shift.

  1. Open Age Verify; existing groups show their name, required age and item count.
  2. Tap + to create a group.
  3. Enter the group name and Age Required (e.g. 21).
  4. Tap ITEMS (or switch to categories) and select the restricted products, then SAVE.
  5. Open Settings: decide whether staff may skip a check, turn on Autocomplete and enable the receipt line if you need proof.
  6. Test it on a real order: add a restricted item, scan a driver's licence at the prompt and confirm the sale continues.
Create one group per legal age — for example 21+ for alcohol and 18+ for tobacco.

Configuration

Setup scenarios

Each scenario is a complete configuration — follow the steps in order.

Most configuration screens require the Clover employee role of Manager or Admin.
121+ on alcohol, 18+ on tobacco

Two different legal ages in one store, on two different sets of products.

  1. Open Age Verify and tap +.
  2. Name the first group Alcohol 21+ and set Age Required to 21.
  3. Tap Items (or switch to categories) and select everything alcoholic, then save.
  4. Create a second group Tobacco 18+ with age 18 and its own items.
  5. In the Register, add one of those products — the app asks for the date of birth before you can continue.
2Scan the driver's licence instead of typing

Faster at the counter and less room for a typo.

  1. Make sure your Clover scanner is working — the same one you use for barcodes reads the licence.
  2. Add a restricted item in the Register so the age prompt appears.
  3. Scan the back of the driver's licence; the date of birth is read from the barcode.
  4. Turn on Autocomplete in Settings so the rest of the order verifies automatically after the first scan.
  5. Train the cashiers: scan the licence when the prompt appears, and type the birthday only as a fallback.
  6. If a licence is not recognised, send the details to contact@payplaxe.com so the format can be added.
3Tighten the policy: no skipping, print the proof

For audits you need evidence that the check happened.

  1. Open Settings and turn Allow employees to skip age verification off.
  2. Enable Set your text on age-verified order receipts and write the line you want printed.
  3. Run a test sale and confirm the receipt carries the line.
  4. Open Reports to review checks by date, age, employee and order.
  5. Export or share the report when you need it for an inspection.
The app records that a verification was performed and the age; it does not store the customer's identity document.

Everyday use

What the cashier does after the app is configured.

  1. Add the restricted item; the age prompt appears by itself.
  2. Scan the customer's driver's licence, or type the birthday as mm/dd/yy.
  3. With Autocomplete on, the rest of the order is verified automatically.
  4. The sale continues; the receipt carries your verification line if you enabled it.

Questions

FAQ

Which IDs can be scanned?
US driver's licences with the standard barcode. Scan one at the age prompt to check your scanner; report unrecognised licences to support so the format can be added.
What if the customer has no scannable ID?
The cashier types the date of birth as mm/dd/yy.
Can staff bypass the check?
Only if you allow it — the Allow employees to skip age verification switch controls that.
Does the check repeat for every item in the order?
Not with Autocomplete enabled: once a birthday is entered, the app verifies the rest of the order automatically.
Where can I see past checks?
In the Reports screen — date and time, age, employee and order ID.
How much does it cost?
$0.99 per month for the whole store, with a 30-day free trial.
